Having a first class in microbiology in many universities is often referred to as a norm. The Department of Microbiology‎ in Ekiti state university which is often termed "College of Microbiology" by many students of the institution had their last fist class student in 2008.

Olumide Omogboye who was awarded the first class in 2008 is now one of the best lecturers in Microbiology Department of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU). Since then, the best graduating students from the department have always graduated with a second class upper division.

Fortunately, the latest graduating students of the department  (2013/2014 set) who had their convocation ceremony on the 20th of March 2015 were opportuned to produced a‎nother first class student after 6years.
